GENIUS prize

WE NEED YOU, GENIUS!

The MI-DNA DISC team is currently developing a new technology based on genetically engineered bacteria. We believe that this technology could reshape how we produce and deliver genetic material, and possibly diverse fields and applications we haven’t thought of yet.

This is why we created the GENIUS (Genetically ENgineered Ideas for Unconventional Solutions) competition: we are looking for students and young researchers across Europe who can imagine new and creative ways to use this technology. Your proposal might address a pressing problem, open a new area of research, or suggest an unexpected practical application.

REGISTRATION TO THE COMPETITION CLOSED ON DECEMBER 31st, 2025!

THE GENIUS COMPETITION

Synthetic biology is opening up new frontiers in how we interact with the living world, and we are inviting you to be part of this journey. On October 13th, 2025, the GENIUS competition was officially presented at TUM (Technical University of Munich), with the aim of engaging European students and researchers and give them the opportunity to be an active participant in this ever-evolving field. The recording of the launch event, as well as the presentation, are now available on this web page.

We now entered a new phase, in which it is possible to officially register to the competition and submit your proposal according to the shared plan.

WHY YOU SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN GENIUS

Participation in GENIUS is open to all students, doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scientists currently studying or working at a European university or research institution.

Taking part is a great opportunity to actively enter this fascinating field of research and interact with some of the leading experts.

What’s more, the best proposal will receive a prize which will include financial, as well as educational and scientific benefits.

FAQ

What is the full technological scope of the ideas we can propose?

Your idea can be broad and leverage on bacteria’s capabilities. Specifically, the envisioned technology enables the detection, by the engineered bacteria, of an external stimuli (e.g. temperature, light, pH, etc.) and react accordingly. We strongly encourage proposals that creatively exploit this capability in different settings.

Do our ideas have to be completely new inventions based on the bacteria?

No. We are looking for high-impact application ideas. Your proposal can focus on:

  • 1) A totally new application OR
  • 2) The optimization of an existing process or technology where our core biological system (bacteria taking/releasing DNA based on external stimuli) is a crucial and novel component. The key is to involve the bacteria’s unique capabilities.

What are the specific technical constraints for the proposed application?

Your application idea must be compatible with the following platform parameters: — Host Organisms: E. coli or Bacillus subtilis. — DNA Length: Oligonucleotides between 500 bp and 10,000 bp. — Operating Temperature: Bacterial life and DNA transfer must occur between 0°C and 37°C. — Transfection Efficiency: Assume a working efficiency rate between 20% and 90% (as detailed in the presentation).

Will I own the Intellectual Property (IP) for my idea?

Ideas generated during the Challenge that lead to new Intellectual Property (IP) will be discussed and managed collaboratively within the MI-DNA DISC consortium. The specific terms of ownership and exploitation for the winning ideas will be formally negotiated with the Consortium to ensure fair usage and development under the EU project rules.

How will the ideas be scored and selected?

All proposals will be evaluated based on the average score (0 to 5) across multiple, defined criteria (e.g., Novelty, Impact, Feasibility, Consortium Fit).

What is the minimum score required to be considered for the prize?

The minimum threshold for an idea to be eligible for the final selection round is a mean score of 3.8 out of 5. Only ideas meeting or exceeding this score will be entered into the pool of potential winners.

ABOUT THE MI-DNA DISC PROJECT

MI-DNA Disc (MIcrobe-synthesised DNA NAnostructures for DIsplay-controlled Storage Cartridges) aims to bring a low-cost, energy-efficient, and fast data driven solution that can write, edit, store, and retrieve DNA-based data, more efficiently compared to current technologies.

MI-DNA Disc features the first in vivo system combining simple and easily available hardware components with ability of bacterial cells to store and edit DNA-based data.

The project was funded by EIC Pathfinder Challenges, under the Horizon Europe framework.
